What San Diego plumbers
actually pay for SEO (2026)

Plumber SEO cost is a range wide enough to be useless until you see what each price buys. We read the price pages and the surveys so you do not have to. Every number below was on a public page we opened on October 3, 2026.

Short answer

Most published local SEO plans run $300 to $2,000 a month

  • One-time setup: often $0 on monthly plans; a published plumber setup in our sample was $700. Ours is $750.
  • Monthly local SEO: published plans we read started at $300 and topped out near $2,000 for most shops. Ahrefs' survey puts the average local SEO retainer at $1,557 a month.
  • Project work: Ahrefs' most common project band is $2,501–$5,000; Backlinko says projects generally fall between $1,000 and $5,000.
  • Plumbers specifically: entry plans from plumber and contractor specialists ran $497 to $2,600 a month, and one San Diego plumbing content build was listed at $4,729 a month for six months.

One more data point

Our price: $750 once, then $1,400 a month

The profile setup is $750 per location. Local SEO Starter is $1,400 a month, month-to-month, for San Diego County plumbers, trades and small businesses. Expect months, not weeks. Every price is on one page.

How much does SEO cost for a plumber, according to the surveys?

Three industry surveys publish SEO prices, and they disagree, because they asked different people. None of them is about plumbers. All three are about the people selling SEO, which is still the best public read on the market.

Ahrefs polled 439 SEO providers (article last updated August 2024). The average monthly retainer was $2,917. Local SEO came in lower, at $1,557 a month on average. The single most popular retainer band was $501–$1,000 a month. Looking only at U.S. and Canada providers, 79.1% charge at least $1,001 a month.

SE Ranking surveyed 260 agencies (published December 2024), and 94% of them focus on small or local businesses. In that group, 64% offer monthly retainers below $1,000.

Backlinko surveyed over 300 SEO professionals (page updated December 2025) and puts the average monthly cost at $1,000–$2,500, with hourly rates usually $50–$100 and project work generally $1,000–$5,000. It also says U.S.-based services cost 3–5 times more than those from emerging markets.

Read together: a small local business is mostly quoted somewhere between $500 and $2,500 a month, and where a provider sits, who does the work and what they deliver explains most of the spread.

What do San Diego and contractor SEO providers publish?

Surveys are averages. Price pages are offers. We read ten of them on October 3, 2026: shops with San Diego SEO pages, national contractor and plumber specialists, and one software company that also sells a managed service. Where a page gave no number, we left it out. "Based" is where each site says it is.

What do you actually get at $300, $1,500 and $5,000 a month?

The price is a proxy for hours. SEO for a plumber is mostly four kinds of work: the Google Business Profile, directory listings (citations), reviews, and pages on your website. Here is what the price pages above say each band buys.

Around $300–$500 a month

Upkeep, mostly automated. Webticians' $300 San Diego plan lists on-page work, backlinks, profile work and a monthly report. UR Local Marketing's $379 Starter covers 10 keywords and 5 citations a month, and its page says it leaves out profile updates. Contractor-SEO.com's $499 plan adds two service or location pages a month. Fine for keeping an already-strong profile tidy. It will rarely move a plumber in a crowded part of the county.

Around $1,000–$2,000 a month

Real content and real people. BrightLocal's $1,299 managed plan lists 10+ city or service-area pages a month, 25 foundation citations in month one and 10 new ones a month after. Contractor-SEO.com's $1,999 plan has eight pages a month, a review growth system and conversion tracking. This is where Ahrefs' $1,557 local average sits, and where a single-location plumber usually belongs.

Around $2,500–$5,000+ a month

Volume and, often, ads. SEO249 lists San Diego plumbing at $4,729 a month for a six-month content build. Outdooit starts at $2,600. Agencies in Ahrefs' survey average $3,209 a month. At this level, ask for the deliverables in writing: how many pages, how many links, how many hours, and whether ad management is included or billed on top.

More money is not automatically better. It should buy more work you can count, not a nicer report.

What changes the number for a San Diego plumber?

How big your service area is

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Distance counts from where your business is. A plumber in Clairemont who wants calls from Oceanside and Chula Vista needs a page for each area and more prominence to reach that far. More areas, more pages, more cost.

How crowded your corner of the county is

Search "plumber" from where your customers live, not your office, and look at the three businesses in the map pack. If they have years of reviews and a page for every service, catching them takes more months of work than catching a half-finished profile. Our guide to ranking in the San Diego map pack walks through that check.

How many reviews you have

Google's ranking help page says review count and score factor into local ranking. A plumber with 15 reviews against neighbors with hundreds needs a steady review-ask habit before anything else pays off. That is cheap to run and slow to build.

Whether the website needs rebuilding

Monthly SEO publishes pages to a site. If the site is slow, thin or on a builder you cannot edit, the first money goes to fixing that, often as a one-time project. Our free website audit tells you which side of that line you are on before you pay anyone.

Whether you also run ads

Ad spend is paid to Google and is a separate line from the management fee. Some quotes bundle the two; some bury the fee inside the spend. Ask for them split out.

What are the red flags in an SEO quote?

Guaranteed rankings

Google's own hiring guide says it plainly: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google." A quote that promises position one by a date is guessing or reselling something you do not want.

A long contract with no exit

Minimums are not automatically bad. Some providers above ask for three months, and one runs on a 12-month campaign basis because results take time. But most plans in our sample were month-to-month. If you sign a year, know exactly what you get each month and what leaving costs.

You do not own the site or the profile

Your Google Business Profile should sit in a Google account you own, with the agency added as a manager. Your domain, website and analytics should be in your name. If the agency owns them, leaving means starting over.

A package that is only counts

"40 citations" or "100 backlinks" a month is a number, not a plan. Directory listings matter once; after that, a plumber moves on reviews and real pages. If a cheap package is mostly listings and a report, you are paying for what a tool does on its own.

What does Haymaker charge, and why?

Treat this as one more row in the table, not the answer. Every number is on our pricing page.

  • $750 once. Google Business Profile setup, per location, done by hand in 10 business days.
  • $1,400 a month. Local SEO Starter, month-to-month: profile management (4 posts a month, photo refresh, spam-listing reports), a response to every review within 2 business days, a monthly review-ask campaign, a 50+ directory build-out in month one, one new keyword-targeted page a month, rank tracking on 10 keywords, a monthly report and a 30-minute call.
  • $3,500 once. A five-page website build with the copy, analytics and call tracking. Half at kickoff, half at launch. You own the domain, the site, the code and the accounts.
  • $1,500 / $1,800 / $2,700 a month. Google Ads management on $1k–$3k, $3k–$6k or $6k–$12k of monthly spend, paid to Google directly. Month-to-month.
  • $3,400 / $4,800 / $6,800 a month. The Foundation, Growth and Dominate packages, plus the $3,500 build: SEO, ads management and 4, 8 or 12 SEO pages a month.

Why $1,400 and not $379? Because the Starter is the work in the $1,000–$2,000 band done by a person: every review answered, a real page written and published each month, and listings built once properly. It sits inside Backlinko's $1,000–$2,500 range and a little under Ahrefs' $1,557 local average.

We are a new shop with a first cohort of ten spots, and we will not show you rankings we have not produced. Start any monthly plan in that cohort and the $750 setup is on us (ten seats or March 31, 2027). If your problem is calls going to voicemail rather than calls not coming in, that is the other door.

How do you compare
two SEO quotes?

Put each quote next to these ten lines. A blank is an answer too.

  1. 01The monthly fee, the setup fee and the minimum term, each as a number.
  2. 02How many new pages a month, written by whom and published where.
  3. 03Who answers your reviews, how fast, and whether they ask customers for new ones.
  4. 04Which directories get built and fixed, and whether that is month one or forever.
  5. 05Which keywords are tracked, and from where in San Diego County.
  6. 06Whether ad spend and ad management are separate lines.
  7. 07Who owns the domain, the website, the profile and the analytics, in writing.
  8. 08No guaranteed ranking anywhere in the proposal.
  9. 09Who does the work: the person who sold it, a team, or someone you will never meet.
  10. 10What the monthly report shows: calls and form leads, not just rankings.

Questions owners ask

Straight
answers.

Is $300 a month SEO worth it?
Sometimes, for upkeep. The $300 to $500 plans we read cover a handful of keywords, a few directory listings a month and a report, and one or two pages at most. That can keep a strong profile tidy in a quiet area. It rarely moves a plumber past established competitors in a crowded part of San Diego County, because the work that does that, real pages and every review answered, takes more hours than $300 pays for.
How long before SEO pays off for a plumber?
Months, not weeks, and nobody can promise a date. Fixing a broken or half-finished profile can show sooner. Reviews, pages and links build slowly. Judge it at six months on calls and booked jobs, not rankings. If you need calls this month, that is what ads are for.
Should a plumber do ads or SEO first?
Fix the Google Business Profile first; it is cheap and both depend on it. Then, if you need calls now and can fund the ad spend, run ads while SEO builds. If cash is tight, put it into the profile, reviews and one good page a month, and add ads later. Ad spend is paid to Google on top of any management fee, so budget for both.
Do I need to sign a contract?
Not usually. Most of the plans we read on October 3, 2026 were month-to-month; some asked for three months, one ran on a 12-month campaign basis, and one was a fixed six-month build. A minimum is not a scam by itself. Just know what you get each month, what leaving costs, and that you own the website, the domain and the profile either way. Our monthly plans are all month-to-month.
How much does local SEO cost for a small business?
Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers puts the average local SEO retainer at $1,557 a month, and its most popular retainer band is $501 to $1,000. SE Ranking found 64% of the agencies it surveyed offer retainers below $1,000 a month. The published local plans we read ran from $300 to about $2,000 a month for most providers, with setup fees from $0 to $750.
